Gordon Bates, MD

Gordon Wright Bates, Jr., M.D. was born in Boston, Massachusetts but spent the majority of his childhood in Huntsville, Alabama after his father migrated south  to join NASA in the early days of the space program.  Wright graduated from Grissom High School, received a B.S. in biology from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee and his M.D. from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Following OB/GYN residency at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, he practiced OB/GYN in rural Georgia before fellowship.   Dr. Bates completed his Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He subsequently served on faculty at Wilford Hall Medical Center in the US Air Force and was named the company grade officer of the year for the 78 th medical group, Robins Air Force Base and the Air Logistics command. After his military service, Dr. Bates returned to his alma mater where he was the fellowship and division director at UAB for 10+ years and attained full professor with tenure status. Since 2018, Dr. Bates has been the Grimes endowed chair at Baylor Scott & White Health Temple Department of OBGYN and the physician lead for the system wide Women’s Service Line Governance Council. Dr. Bates is a board certified specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology and subspecialist in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.   His focus involves polycystic ovarian syndrome and its metabolic sequelae as well as numerous aspects of infertility including assisted reproductive technologies (IVF) resulting in numerous chapters and reviews, over 50 peer reviewed publications and hundreds of local, regional and national presentations.   His clinical acumen and bedside manner have made him a patient favorite with multiple awards, including Birmingham’s Best Fertility Specialist, Alabama Super Doctor and Best Doctors in America. Wright is also active with numerous leadership roles in the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, the Society of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility and the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technologies. Dr. Bates’ commitment to education has resulted in numerous teaching and education awards including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist mentor of the year in 2016.
