Jocelyn Wessels, BSc, MSc, PhD

Dr. Jocelyn Wessels is a Researcher in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, and an academic scientist turned entrepreneur. During her time in academia Dr. Wessels focused on understanding relationships between the reproductive microbiotas and disease, and identifying non-invasive biomarkers of endometriosis. This work, and her passion for change led her to co-found Afynia Laboratories. Dr. Wessels holds a BSc and MSc in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Guelph, and a PhD in Medical Sciences from McMaster University. She has written over 37 peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts, contributed to 3 patents, and won several awards including the CIHR Vanier Scholarship, the CIHR Fellowship Award and the Ontario Women’s Health Scholar award, and a YMCA Women of Distinction Award in STEM. Dr. Wessels was also a co-author on the 2024 Canadian Clinical Practice Guidelines on the Diagnosis of Endometriosis.
